Star Trekin' (edit)

As much as I mildly dislike Jonafon Woss, I watched his film 2008 show tonight.

The look at the at "Sweeny Todd" film was good, even if it was to listen to an American actor mangle an English accent*, again. This time it was different because:-

  1. Jonny Depp's English accent was a bazillian times better that Dick Van Dykes in Marry Poppins
  2. Hellena B Carter made her own accent sound similar to JD's so he didn't sound too crap.
I've seen HBC in all sorts of stuff covering stage, tv and film and she never sounded like that before.

Seeing Ross fawn all over JD and Tim Burton almost made me sick, then I remembered that I hate vomiting more than his toadying.
It's a film that I will wait until it comes out on DVD, that way I can fast forward thru' the singing parts.

On the up side however,

THEY'RE MAKING A NEW STAR TREK MOVIE!!!

YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!

I can't wait, they showed a clip of the construction of the Enterprise N.C.C. 1701 ( no bloody A, B, C, D or E).
I just need to avoid any unexpected buses until December, I'll even fly to America to see it on it's release.

Yes I am a TREKKIE and damn proud of it.
But I absolutely will not dress up in the uniform that hangs in my wardrobe.

* And don't even get me started on Hugh Laurie and that cow pat of an accent in House!

Now, I realize that my opinion won't mean much to you, since I am a theatre chick, but you might be pleasantly surprised at Sweeney Todd. It's pretty fabulous.

And I do adore JD, but even as an American, there is something kinda weird about his British accent. It's just... off somehow.

Have you noticed how all the Adverts for Sweeny Todd don't contan any singings so as not to put people off. And JD's accent is the sober version of Cpt Jack Sparrow. Or a slightly less foppish version of the Inspector in From Hell. HBC is awesome and everything she does gold.

As for the new Trek movie, Silar from Heroes plays the young Spok and apparently the original TV show cast will have hidden roles in the film for the nerds to spot...but Bill Shatner is annoyed that he hasn't been asked to be in the film.

As for Wossy, he's annoying, but he always gets the best out of his guests on his chat show because they always look so much better next to him...plus he got Minnie Driver to discuss her sex toy on TV. At least he's not his brother Paul and look at his wife...ummmm, and she's the screen writer for Stardust the Neil Gaiman novel.

Well that was an informative collection of words.

later geezer.

Is JD even really qualifiable as American anymore? He lives in freaking Paris.

And dude, Dick Van Dyke's accent is the benchmark for crappy English accents.

Man, no way could you make me see that movie. I hate JD and I hate musicals. I know Satan has that movie waiting for me when I go to hell. I'll save it til then.

Note to self- don't invite Bezzie to Random Movie Night, just in case....

The only disappointment there is about the new ST is that my main loverman, William Shatner, won't be in it.

Hi Trillian,
I'm not one for the theatre, as my disbelief can't be willingly suspended. Call it a lack of imagination on my part, but when I go out to be entertained I don't want to engage my brain if at all possible. A trestle table some tea chests and a couple of sheets don't really do it for me when it comes to dressing a set. Films for me every time, sit back, watch screen and eat popcorn.

Hi Ash,
I can just see the bloke who played Silar as a young Spok, yes that's him. I'm so excited, god what a nerd I am.
As for Billy Shatner not being in it, well it just wont be the same, but he's been doing it now for almost 40 years, time to pass the torch I think.
And yes a very informative collection of words.

Hi Bezzie,
I'm with you every step of the way on that one. Can actors who live abroad for so long truly belong to their country of origin? OK they don't on the whole emigrate, they just use their adopted home as a tax haven, gits!
Musicals are the invention of Beelzebub and all his hellish minions.

Hi OLPP,
I think I've covered WS' absence already.
Anyhow when the enterprise was in build a very young and slim Lt Kirk was posted on the U.S.S. Republic and the skipper of the Enterprise was supposed to be Robert T. April.
Sorry Don't know what happened there, all of a sudden I found myself in my happy place for no reason at all.

Thank God the uniform stays where it belongs mate!!
In Guzz at the mo for some lovely OST time, bet you're missing the MOB now? Distex tomos then weekenders prior to deployment on monday. But before we head off to sunnier climes, yes, you guessed it, we have to do a last thursday war!!!! WTF!! NBCDex's really piss me off, no least because we can't call it NBCD any more, we have to call it CBRN....pah!
For all the other folks who read Ed's blog, little of that will have made sense as i'm still in the Navy and we have a weird lexicon all our own. Maybe if Ed's feeling really benevolent, one day he'll do a Jackspeak blog entry.

Later Mate

PS A day alongside is day wasted and an emtpy jetty is a happy jetty.
